Vintage Gil Holsters Limited Edition HEAVY Caramel Leather Widemouth Duffel Bag

This is a beautiful vintage Widemouth traveler's duffel bag from luxury leather goods designer Gil Holsters. This piece was made in keeping with a "Southwestern" theme - from Gil Holster's 1980's "Native Fields" collection. This bag couldn't be further away from those modern ensembles of today. The leather on this piece is simply otherworldly. Unlike leather duffels of today, it is thick and heavy, plush and soft, malleable and flexible instead of fixed and hard.

The leather, though very thick, actually has the ability to "fold in" on itself when the duffel is empty - a testament to the quality and ultra plush quality of the leather. Of course, one cannot miss the opportunity to mention the hue of the leather. I would liken the color of this bag to a "caramel" complexion, almost "marbled" in appearance.

From a distance, the color seems solid - however, up close while exposed to natural light, you will see that there are beautiful nuances of color alteration (light and dark) in the bold leather facade. The bag features two, seamlessly connected thick leather handles. On each of these handles (where both sides of the handles connect), hand-welded steel and brass plaques of a "Southwestern" aesthetic.

Likewise, the closure on this bag (a thick leather strap) bears a steel and brass "Southwestern" implement with a "keyhole" of sorts running through the middle. The turn lock is mounted to the bag's front (another steel and brass plaque), and the turning key is threaded through the implement at the end of the strap (give it a turn for an extra secure closure). Such a stunningly beautiful aspect of design that gives this bag a truly "heavy duty" rugged 80's Southwestern aesthetic. Below the mounted turn lock plaque, there are elements of meticulously embroidered leather. On this embroidered leather front is the brand name "Gil Holsters, " followed by the phrase "the tradition continues" - (for those unfamiliar, Gil Holsters was for many years one of the most respected, luxury leather good makers in the US). Underneath the embroidered leather brand and logo, a "Gil Holsters" symbol of wrapped steel.

This bag, keep in mind, has been meticulously restored. A significant amount of time, and financial investment, went into returning this piece to its true form. No alteration were made, however, everything you are looking at is entirely original. This duffel is "widemouth" in style, making loading and unloading an entirely simple, easy process. The interior of the duffel is entirely Suede leather - soft, beautifully colored.

There are two pigskin storage flaps hanging from both sides of the bag's interior. Overall, this is ABSOLUTELY a one off. You will not find Gil Holsters in their 80's pinnacle form - anywhere... In fact, this is the only model that my business partner and I were able to dig up in terms of the 80's Gil Holsters "Native Fields" collection. It appears (aside from this piece) that the 80's Gil Holsters line is extinct in the online resale world.

A lot of time went into finding this piece, even more time went into returning it to its stunning form. What you have here, in essence, is an 80s bag (with all of that beautiful 80's charm) that looks as though (condition wise) it was made in the late 2000s. A time capsule no doubt, one that you will not come across again.

The bag is in truly beautiful shape. I would rank the condition a 9/10. The leather is soft, plush, malleable - without tears, frays, etc. There are a few small variations in the color of the leather at the exterior (spots that appear a little darker, lighter than others) Has a sort of "marbled" look - not sure if this was the way the bag was made, or if these "stains" - locations of slight alterations in color - were intentional. Either way, so perfectly fitting of the bag.

At the interior, there are two spots of discoloration (looks like suede was rubbed with water), otherwise no flaws. Steel plaques along with brass are simply mesmerizing.
