This is a historically Important and RARE Antique American WPA Social Realism Oil Painting on canvas, by seldomly seen Massachusetts born educator and California WPA New Deal Movement artist, Nicholas Panesis 1913 - 1967. This piece depicts two stoic figures, a gentleman in a black suit and felt hat, and a woman in a flowing white dress, carrying a large pail. Her hair is tied in a tight bun, and she exhibits a pensive and determined expression on her face. In the distance, a small farmhouse and open fields can be seen, and overhead, a stormy dark sky is visible. This couple exhibits the strength and determination of American farmers during the Dustbowl of the Great Depression. It is a powerful and poignant image, evocative of Grant Wood's American Gothic 1930.

Signed: "Panesis" in the lower left corner. Additionally, this piece is also signed at the top edge of the canvas, and also, written in graphite on the top stretcher bar of the verso, it reads: Nicholas Panesis... " There is also the remnant of an old, yellowed exhibition label, which reads: "...

This piece can be confidently dated to the 1930's and was painted for the California Works Progress Administration while the artist was living in the city of Los Angeles. Approximately 25 x 40 1/2 inches.

Very good condition for nearly a century of age, with some mild scuffing, edge wear, age related craquelure and light soiling in some areas please see photos. Born in Middleboro, MA on Dec. Panesis studied art at Syracuse University and then taught ceramics at Alfred University.

During his early career he painted portraits and other fine art. He lived briefly in San Francisco in the early 1930s before settling in Los Angeles where he worked for various animation studios as a layout designer. He also illustrated the cover of the book, "Snow Hill" in 1942, "Fair Stood the Wind for France" in 1944 and "Journey Cake" in 1946. Panesis died in Los Angeles on Nov. Studied at Syracuse University, then taught ceramics at Alfred University in New York. In the early 1930's, he moved to San Francisco, and finally settling in Los Angeles, where he worked as an illustrator and as a layout designer for numerous animation studios. He was a versatile artist who employed a variety of styles, ranging from figural abstraction to more realistic works.
