This is a fascinating and Fine Antique Old West 19th c. American Folk Art Black HORSE Portrait Painting, Charcoal on Paper, likely dating to the 1880's - 1890's. This artwork depicts the fine portrait of a black stallion, who's facial expression displays surprise or fear, as if he had just been spooked by something or someone. He looks out at the viewer with a wide-eyed glance, with his majestic mane and silky black fur coat skillfully rendered by the artist in a medium that is very difficult to master. This piece does not appear to be signed, but it may be signed below the matting.
I have not taken this artwork out of the frame to confirm this. Approximately 22 5/8 x 28 5/8 inches including frame. Actual visible artwork is approximately 14 5/8 x 20 3/8 inches. Good overall condition for well over a century of age and storage, with moderate - heavy gesso loss to the original 19th century ornate gilded wood frame, and speckles of soiling and charcoal staining to the original paper matting please see photos.Acquired in Los Angeles County, California, but I suspect that this artwork originated from the Northeastern United States.
