Illustrated with a large folding map with coloured outlines and 24 full-page hand-coloured engravings after drawings by C. First Edition in English, dedicated to King George IV. The engraved plates are elegantly and romantically hand-coloured. Several plates with the early issue watermarks 1817 and 1818, and all plates before numbers. Each of the plates except those depicting Mainz and Biberich match Tooley's first state.

According to Ackermann's advertisements for the work, discussed fully by Abbey, this is one of 750 copies printed on'large wove Elephant Vellum Paper' and 50 large paper copies were published in six monthly parts from October, 1819, to March, 1820. Gerning's first edition appeared at Wiesbaden in 1819, but it was not illustrated. A later German edition was published in 1822 at Frankfurt, containing 24 views.
