Vintage 70s Chet Vogt leather folder hand tooled by master leather worker Chet Vogt. The colors are beautiful and the leather has kept its distinct aged color and feel. The cover art is hand-tooled as well as painted which gives the folder its own distinct look. Known mostly for his belt buckles, handbags, and saddles, it is nearly impossible to find a piece like this anywhere else. Despite the fact that this folder is roughly 50 years old, its quality is nearly impeccable.
The seams of the folder are completely intact and it is still fully operable. The color of the folder has remained, hardly fading despite the age, keeping the golden brown hue in which it was made, and the feel of the folder is nearly unmatched.
Made from Top Grain Steerhide, age has only enhanced the feel of this folder. When held you get that smooth, malleable leather feel which signifies quality leather. The folder has not stiffened over time. The leather is not cracking or chipping.
It is not often you come across leather made so long ago, yet feels almost brand new. This folder also has more weight than you would expect to, reminiscent of. How high-quality leather should feel. Its what good leather used to be.
It has that almost silky feel, while at the same time displays a roughness that you come to expect when holding Steerhide. Other than a couple tiny scuff marks on the front of the folder, this folder is in nearly perfect condition. The interior has two pockets, along with a pen holder, and looks nearly brand new. What makes this piece so unique, is the cover art on the folder. Despite collecting leather for nearly 50 years, I have yet to see a piece with artwork like Vogt produced here.
You are able to see every little detail that Vogt put into this piece, along with the time taken to create it. Although I promised myself I would never part with it, it seems quite wrong to watch this beautiful work of art collect dust as it sits on my bookshelf year after year, knowing it could be put to much better use in someone else's hands. As knowing someone is putting a piece I have watched grow old with me to the use it deserves, is worth more than anything else. However as the years have gone by I have realized how much more special it is than I thought.
You will never come by a piece like this online, or anywhere else for that matter. Vogt is now strictly producing belt buckles, it seems this piece is in a category of its own as you are unable to find leather produced from this esteemed creator anymore. The feel, the color, the artwork None of these things can be fully explained until you have held the leather in your own hands. Only then will you realize the investment you have made. The photos (obviously) do not do this piece justice. You are unable to see or feel how much age, and at same time life, this folder has. You are unable to see the incredible detail that is used on the cover art of the folder. Like I stated prior I have collected leather for many years, and have yet to find anything remotely close to this piece in terms of its uniqueness. Height - just over 12 inches. Length Across - 9.25 inches. Length Across When Open: 16.75 inches.
